hehe thank you vey much for that hint; this was exactly what i did. i am using 
your suggested "sox input output downsample 100 speed 100" command now and it 
basically does exactly what i want. i don't need any tickmarks for the time 
for my application so i can perfectly live with this solution. it takes about 
5 sec to plot one file which is absolutely acceptable for now.
