"Were you not ready to die for me?" she asked, reminding him of the
mindmeld they shared when she had nearly died from the assassin's second
attack.

"Samuel has offered me second-in-command of Star Fleet.  I accepted,
though I assured him I would discuss it with you before I made my decision
official.  If I am in the job a day, or a decade, and the time comes when
you must leave, I would go with you.  If you still wished it."

She stopped and studied his face.  Her fingers still absentmindedly traced
symbols on the back of his neck.  Then met his eyes and spoke sincerely.
"I guess I sound like a naive school girl in a Terran gothic novel.  Let
me assure you, I am neither naive nor a child.  And I know what I want."
