(ooc: a bit of character development. sorry, i'm in the mood to write,
not clean my apartment.)
She stared out at the stunning sight beyond her window. The moon shone
brightly, illuninating the calm ocean below.
And lighting the face of the man who slept beside her.
She had fallen asleep with her leg stretched intimately across his body
and her head pillowed by his chest. She listened to his heart, its beat
slowed in his slumber.
Shifting carefully to avoid awakening him, she studied his face. In sleep,
his eternally youthful face further belied his years. His lips were
curled up in slight smile, and--smiling herself--she wondered what he
dreamt about.
They had known each other such a short time. She knew so little about
him. Yes, all of his memories had inadvertently become hers through a
mindmeld, but she had chosen to wall those memories off to honor his
privacy and, very likely, to save her sanity.
Even without accessing those memories, she knew that he had given his
heart to many women in his long life. She sensed that he needed to be
with someone too much to stay alone for long.
Despite her years, she had given her heart to no one. She had taken
lovers, but none had touched her heart before him. Now, she realized she
could stand to be alone no longer.
Her thoughts wandered. Their past together was so brief and so filled
with troubles. And their future? Would they build their lives here, in
Star Fleet and on Terra, or would they be forced to build new lives
elsewhere in order to protect his secret?
With a sigh, she closed her eyes and rested her head against his chest.
They would deal with that whenever the time came to deal with it. For
now, she let the beating of his heart lull her back to sleep.

She stared out at the stunning sight beyond their viewport. The moon
shone brightly in the distance, illuninating the starfield with a white
halo.
And lighting the face of the man who slept beside her.
She had fallen asleep with her leg stretched intimately across his body
and her head pillowed by his chest. She listened to his heart, its beat
slowed in his slumber.
Shifting carefully to avoid awakening him, she studied his face. In sleep,
the lines in his face had smoothed. His lips were curled up in slight
smile, and--smiling herself--she wondered what he dreamt about.
They had known each other for such a long time. She knew so much about
him. They had always seemed to be sensitive to one another, despite her
lack of psionic ability. And that senstivity had grown over the years,
especially after their contact with the powerful energy entity, Hunter.
She knew that he had given his heart to few women in his lifetime. She
sensed that, although he had needed to be with someone very much, he had
chosen to stay alone.
She had given her heart to only one before him. That one had died on an
Away Mission on a dead little planet, and she had nearly gone insane from
guilt and loneliness. Now she realized that, even if death parted her
from the man at her side, she would be alone no longer.
Then her thoughts wandered. Their past together was so filled with joy
and trouble. They had built their lives together in Star Fleet and had
had a beautiful daughter together. And their future? Perhaps a few more
years in the service, then retirement to their homes on Earth? Or was
there more awaiting them?
With a sigh, she closed her eyes and rested her head against his chest.
They would deal with that whenever the time came to deal with it. For
now, she let the beating of his heart lull her back to sleep.
