Matt took a moment from blowing smoke rings toward his ceiling.  They
disappeared completely from sight just a meter over his head, as the
ventilation system systematically sought and removed the offending
ash-filled parcels of air.

"Brennan here," he replied before taking another long pull of the cigar to
start another series of rings.

That was unfair.  "I'm sorry," he added before she could be hurt.  "You may
meet with me briefly, or non-briefly.  It would seem I have no further
duties this - or any forseeable - day.  I'm in my quarters.  And not dressed
to travel."  That wasn't entirely true.  His scrubs would have been
presentable enough.  It was *he* that wasn't fit to travel.
