Celana D'amondra, the Venasian ambassador, sat down gratefully in her office
at the Venasian consulate on Spacedock. Sometimes she wished she made her
residence in the Venasian compound on Earth. Upon arriving back on
Spacedock, she had unexpectedly been surrounded by several press
representatives, asking her to comment on the recent situation surrounding
Dr. Matt Brennan.
"Do you believe he was involved in the attack on the Venasian delegation and
Chief Investigator Telax?"
"Is it true Dr. Brennan is your primary physician?"
"Ambassador, would you care to comment on the rumor that separatist factions
deliberately sabotaged Federation-Venasian negotiations, and Dr. Brennan was
directly involved?"
"Ambassador, what is the Venasian government's current position on..."
Celana, who actually knew little about the situation with Dr. Brennan and
didn't believe it had anything to do with the murder of Chief Investigator
Telax, was surprised the press had descended on her. Dr. Brennan was simply
the physician who oversaw her illness and monitored her current physical
well-being. She had never discussed anything political with him. But, a
high-profile statement, regardless who it came from, would be eaten with
relish by the press.
The press hadn't received their statement.
"They'll be watching and listening from now on, you realize," her aide
Salaar commented mildly in the privacy of the ambassadorial office.
"I know," she replied, "We've handled the press before. They destroy each
other for a byline. Let's get to more important things."
He handed her the day's agenda. After they had spent a few hours going over
the latest trade shipments, she said, "Send the trade information to CinC as
usual. And contact Admiral Lasiter's office and schedule a meeting with
him. I'd like to know what he caused me to fault in my last tennis match."
Salaar nodded and left her office. Pretty soon a message arrived at Admiral
Lasiter's office, requesting to schedule a meeting at his convenience.
