> The cabinet officers were taking notes. > > "Do we have an update on the situation on Spacedock?" > > "I believe so, Mr. President. Vice Admiral Kitanya was looking into the condition on Spacedock and the fleet.", Lasiter said motioning for her to come forward and take the floor.
Kitanya stood, unconsciously straightening her uniform. "Mrrr. Prrresident, Cabinet Memberrrs. The fleet, as the rest of the Federrration, is in shock. Howeverrr, they arrre alrrready mobilizing. The ships in Spacedock have clearrred theirrr morrrings and arrre now in open space. The rest of the fleet that arrre not underrrgoing majorrr dock rrrepairrs have done likewise thrrroughout the Federrrration, and arrre on high alerrrt. We will rrreview and analyze rrrresponse times frrrom this incident in orrrderr to develop a cohesive set of prrrotocols for emerrrgencies such as this one, and include it in everrry ship's trrraining rrregimen." President Montgomery nodded, signaling that she should continue. Lasiter looked a bit relieved. "Special Operrrations stands rrready. Ourrr team on Marrrs is on alerrrt, and can strrrike immediately at any time, anywherrre within the Sol system. Otherrr teams arrre also on alerrrt and can be inserrrted anywherrre in Federrration terrritorry within 24 hourrrs. We arrre prrreparred to worrrk with Starrrfleet and Federrration intelligence agencies as an immediate rrreponse team to neutrrralize any identified thrrreats orrr arrrest perrrpetrrratorrs." Montgomery sat up a bit straighter, then spoke. "Thank you Admiral Kitanya, and thank you Admiral t'Llhweiir for your reports. It seems as if the fleet is in good hands, and that things are in good order. However, I am curious as to why we would need or want Starfleet Special Operations to be standing by if this is an internal, criminal matter...." Lasiter took the question, as the Commander of Starfleet should. "Mr. President, it is a precaution if nothing else. I would like to refer back to statements made earlier inthe briefing that currently all indications are that the attackers are domestic, but intell can not rule out foriegn involvement at this point. regardless of who is involved or responsible, they were able to plan and implement a sniper attack at a gathering where several high ranking Starfleet officers were in attendance, and possibly set off some kind of bomb on the home port of Starfleet. Either way we are not dealing with some rag tag band of disgruntled thugs, but a highly organized organization. We need to be prepared. I would also like to point out that Special Operations forces can be used as a support tool, not as a primary strike unit. " Lasiter seemed to be very much engaged in situation. A good sign considering what occassion brought the VIPs together. But he still did not know about M'Rrenn. President Montgomery looked at the Commanding Admiral for a short, silent moment. He wanted to read the man, who had been trying to burry his only son just a short time ago. Was he really ready for what was to come, or was this just a diversion from reality. Time would tell, and this was not the time nor the place to chat about it. "Your point is well taken, Admiral Lasiter. I want a personal briefing tomorrow morning, Admiral. Until then, continue running things on the Starfleet side as you see fit. We have a press conference to hold. Shall we..." The meeting was over, and it was time to talk to the people... TBC...
