President Montgomery and Admiral Lasiter went to address the people of the Federation.
As the President took the podium, Admiral Lasiter stood behind him on his left. Off
camera were various members of the President's staff and Admirals Kitanya and
t'Llhweiir. As they waited an aide approached them, and gave them the word about the
status meeting that Adm. Lorin Renaud was requesting- Spacedock senior staff, Admiral
Lasiter, and any other member of SF Command that chose to participate. The meeting
would be starting shortly after the press conference was planned to conclude. The
aide also handed them a padd with an updated status report on the situation on
Spacedock. (The damage was contained, and work was shifting to damage control to
assessment and repair. Main power had been restored, and the alert status had not
changed. It took a bit, but the ships were finally allowed to leave port. They were
holding position just off Spacedock's main approach. The delay in getting the ships
out [from the time the order was given to the time they actually started to file out]
was a bit on the long side, but not necessarily too long.)
{thoughts, comments...}
"Good afternoon. Today the Federation Starfleet suffered an attack of the worst kind.
While burrying one of their own, a group of snipers opened fire on the funeral party.
In attendance were several of Starfleet's top admirals, VIP's, and of course, Admiral
Samuel Lasiter who was burrying his only son. Sadly, this is not the extent of the
attack. A short while after the shooting started at the funeral, there was an
explosion on Spacedock. It is unknown if the Spacedock incident is related to the
sniper attack on earth, and that investigation has only begun. Casualties from both
attacks include 11 wounded from the snipers and over 15 from Spacedock and 2 confirmed
dead, both fromthe sniper attack. Their names will be released pending notification
of the families.
On behalf of all of the people of the United Federation of Planets, I wish to extend
my most sincere condolences to the Lasiter family, and to those families that lost
someone in the attack. Investigations into both attacks are currently in their
infantcy, but rest assured that Federation law enforcement in conjunction with
Starfleet will bring those responsible to justice. They will be found. They will be
tried. They will be convicted....."
The President 's speech continued for a few more moments before he turned the podium
over to Lasiter.
Lasiter seemed to have lost some of his focus. Perhaps it was the delay from the
meeting to the start of the press conference that gave him time to think on the events
of the morning. Perhaps it was the bright lights. Or maybe some of both. He looked
just a bit shaken, no not shaken, but rather swollen with emotion.
"First I would like to thank President Montogmery and the many others who have lent
their support to me and my family in our troubled time. I would like to thank the
press for respecting our grief and allowing us privacy to mourn Sam's untimely
passing. ", he paused, as if to regain some of his composure.
"The attacks on Starfleet, on the Federation, are the the desperate acts of a small
group of individuals. The actions of these people only serve to put them under a
microscope, and thus the focus of Federation law enforcement. Rest assured that they
will be found, arrested, and tried like the criminals that they are. If their plan
was to disrupt the chain of command at Starfleet, they failed. If their plan was to
get attention, well, they succeeded. However, I doubt it will turn out to be the
attention that they wanted. Starfleet, Federation and local law enforcement will be
looking for you...."
Lasiter spoke for a short few minutes before he and the President left, taking no
questions from reporters. They said their parting good-byes before heading to their
respective duties.
After parting company with the President, Lasiter rejoined t'Llhweiir and Kitanya.
"So, how ready are we..."
