Rilg sat in his office.  He was going over trade reports that had just come in.  Part of his new job dealt with arranging more trade for the Ferengi with other members of the Council.  While there were strong ties within the Federation, there had been little contact with some of the other members.  The reports were not indicating any major recent changes in that area.

He put the PADD down and walked across the room toward the window.  He had been lucky enough to earn an assigned space that allowed him a window to the exterior of the station.  It was currently looking toward Earth, and Rilg could see all the traffic coming and going from the planet.  The low amount of cloud cover made him miss home, but it did allow him to see all the movement of transports and other vehicles.  It pointed out that he wasn't alone out here.

Just then, the buzzer on his desk sounded.  He walked over and activated the intercom.  On the other end, his receptionist spoke.  "Ambassador, the representative from the Romulans is here.  She was hoping to speak with you."

Rilg was notsure how to respond.  The whole Council was due to meet in the Aqualish Embassy shortly.  He did not have an appointment with her, and he seriously doubted this was a friendly visit.  If the Klingon had bungled in her racist attitude, he knew that the Romulans held Ferengi in even lower regard.  "Please bring the Ambassador into my office."

A moment later the doors to his office parted, and a small Ferengi woman seemed to waddle in.  Behind her, was the elegant woman he had met earlier.  She nodded to the receptionist in appreciation before making her way over to him.  "Ambassador, thank you so much for meeting with me.  I was hoping to speak with you before we had to meet with the Plantoc."

Rilg studied the Romulan's icy eyes for a moment.  They did not seem to give any sign as to what she wanted to talk about, but they seemed to indicate a certain amount of seriousness to the situation.

"Please ... uh ..." Rilg suddenly seemed to come to life.  "Please, take a seat, Madam Ambassador.  Can I get you anything to eat or drink?"

"No, I am fine," she replied.

After waiting for the tall woman to sit, Rilg joined her.  He could not see what he could do to help her with any problem since he was new to the Council and the Ferengi were not known as the first people to call when there was trouble.  "What can I do for you?"

"Ambassador, I must admit that I have some concerns about recent events on the Council."

Rilg waited for a moment for her to continue, but it was clear that she wanted him to speak before she continued.  "What do you mean?"  Rilg knew of only two matters before the Council: the planet Dultar and former-Ambassador Dulath.  There was little that he could do to resolve the issue.

"As you know, my government has a very able intelligence service that is able to keep tabs on our neighbors.  It is through this service that we have learned that Golan Dulath is indeed being held by his own government.  We have reason to believe that they have no plans on allowing him to come to Spacedock as the Council has requested."

Rilg was surprise by the look of concern in the Romulans eyes.  He had not realized how much Romulans could care for outsiders.  In fact, she had said so little at the previous meeting of the Council, Rilg had not believed that she or her government had much concern about anything.

He also knew that she was talking about the Tal Shiar.  That special branch of the Romulan intelligence service may have been severely damaged by its attack on the Dominion, like the Obsidian Order, it was back to its old ways.

"I am not quite sure what you think I can do to help Mr. Dulath.  We have not even heard back from the Cardassian representative about her plans to look into the situation for us."

"She is going to lie.  You know that.  She did it when she talked about contacting her people.  She knew exactly what was going to happen to Golan Dulath when she replaced him."  It was evident that the woman was quiet angry.

"What can I do?  Why did you come to me about this?"

Ael studied Rilg carefully before speaking.  She was taking a chance by working with him, but she saw little alternative.  "I would like you to present the evidence that we have pulled together.  We do not want to reveal our sources in the Cardassian Central Command or the Obsidian Order.  They would never expect us to work with you the Ferengi, and by bleeding the information to the Council through you, the Cardassians will have a harder time identifying the agents we have there."

To be continued...
