"Just waiting for the starbase to give me control of the carrier wave," she assured
him.

As Wells was finishing her statement, her console beeped. Control had officially been
handed over to her.

"Here we go," Kim told him, activating the beam.

The familiar hum of the transporter system sounded and the molecules that made up
Admiral Jackson came together for the first time on the Centurian. Once the process
was completed, he stepped down off the platform and extended a hand to the ship's CO
with a friendly smile.

Colin had not assembled his senior officers, nor the bosun to sound the whistle,
because the Admiral was choosing to come aboard via transporter and not via hard
airlock. In the old days, this had been referred to as coming in "not on the
starboard side", which meant the admiral had no intention of provoking the true pomp
and circumstance to which he was due when first visiting a ship. And now he was
stepping down and already offering his hand. This casualness on the admiral's part
endeared him to the captain immediately.

"Colin Fitzgerald, your servant, sir," Colin greeted him, shaking the hand warmly and
firmly.

(eh?)

"And please allow me to present Lt Commander Kimberly Wells, a most prodigiously
talented chief engineer." Was that a hint of a blush he saw on Kim's cheeks?

"Welcome, Admiral," she said simply, not even sparing a sidelong glance for Colin with
which to wilt him.

(eh?)

"We'll have your gear transferred to your quarters, sir," Colin continued. "With your
permission, I could give you a brief tour of the ship, and then escort you to your
quarters?"

(eh?)
