The question was valid. Brennan had died many times before, but it had been
Carrhae's first time witnessing it. She had not handled it as well as she had
expected. In the seconds it took for her to formulate an answer, her sensitive
ears picked up a sound.
< Music? > she asked.
It was, indeed. <I've taught my stream to sing,> he told her.
> <The Federation still intact?> he teased.
<Some might say it does despite us.> she replied lightly. Then, more seriously,
<I miss you, Matthew.>
<And I, you, Carrhae. I trust I've been suitably replaced as CMO up there?>
(eh?)
<Then when I do come back aboard, I can concentrate more fully on being a good partner.>
