Carrhae had not needed the translator to understand him. The depth of feeling
in his voice had conveyed more than circuitry ever could. She turned towards
him and smiled the smile that only he could inspire. She caressed him with her
eyes, slowly working her way up his body until her jet-black eyes met his. The
warmth that rose from them told him that she saw no 'old man' before her.
"Because to be with anyone else would truly be a waste," she replied.
He had to look away before tears came to him. He had loved so many women in all his very many years, and each of them had been so very different from each other. Carrhae was different from all of them and the fact taht there had been others did not at all diminish what he felt now. The pain of losing Rhiana was still so very fresh and surely there were those who felt that getting involved again so soon was dishonoring her, but they had not suffered the very, very many losses that he had suffered. Matt Brennan was a man of strong feelings and passions and he had long ago learned that although he did not mind solitude, he did not suffer lonliness well. "The venison is ready," he said to distract himself. He cleared his throat, then moved the thin slices of meet onto plates. They had been cooked with and were now garnished with slices of apple and crabapple, and there were broiled potatoes and fresh greens to go with them. He nodded to her to pour the wine as he carried the plates to the table where they could stare into the thick forest, teeming with wildlife, even as they stared at each other.
