"I would like to start by thanking you for seeing me at such short notice," said the Klingon as she accepted the glass of juice. She took a sip and was pleasantly surprised at its sweetness.
"I would only hope, Ambassador," Ael told her simply, "that this should be taken as a sign of the respect for which I and my government hold you and your governement."
The Klingon representated bowed her head slightly. "There is no question that I do respect both you and your government, I was hoping to talk to you about this morning's events."
"I find myself surprised at your ability to be surprised by the duplicitousness of the Cardassians," Ael told her with a frown, but no reproach. "They seem, as a species, to be incapable of honestly."
"I must admit that I am not so surprised about the Cardassians approach to this morning's meeting. While Ambassador Dolath seemed to work in good faith, he former-aide has alway exhibited the behavior that is more traditionally assigned to them by stereotype." Valtris paused again to take a sip. "I was actually more surprised by Grand Proxy Rilg. The Ferengi are never ones to get overly involved in interstellar events unless there is profit involved. Their spy network is limited primarily to the corporate type."
Ael chuckled softly, but warmly. "I find myself often surprised by our vertically challenged colleagues," she told her, "and in particular by their current ambassador. He seems rather... liberal and foreward thinking for one of his species."
Valtris joined her Rihannsu host in a laugh. "I had a conversation with him earlier, and he claims that his people have experienced a bit of a social revolution in recent years. That he represents the Ferengi of today. While I admit they have modernized some of their views, I can't imagine that they would have improved themselves to the point where they can out-spy the Cardassians."
"Granted, I would not assume that their capacity for good espionage is up to ours, or yours, but... I think a little credit is due them. Though I must admit," she said, meeting the Klingon's eyes, "that it might be safe to assume they had a bit of assistance in this particular matter."
Valtris felt her smile broaden slightly. "That is one of the reasons I am here. I have a feeling that the intelligence that Rilg presented this morning was from a different source than he stated. It had a bit of a Tal Shiar feel to the way it was set up." Valtris let the statement hang in the air to see if Ael would take the bait and reveal her involvement.
