"I have a question ... or rather an observation."

"Go ahead,  Doctor," replied the Security Officer

"One thing that we have not  considered is that this phenomenon could be
some sort of biological machine.  While we have little to no experience with
that sort of technology, there is  nothing to say that technological
machines are the  only way to advance  a society's technology.  It is not as
if the Federation has not  experiences such technology in the past."

Aravis had to admit that she  had not considered such a possibility herself.
"Doctor, do you know of  a species that has such a ray?"

Hilda shook her head.  "A xenobiologist would have a better idea for you.
It would not have to be a naturally occuring design.  It is something that
could have been bread or genetically engineered."

"So you are suggesting that this is not necessarily the random act of a
natural creature, but perhaps some sort of weapon?" asked Aravis.  It was
not so much that it was beyond the realm of possibilities, but it would be a
rare instance.

"Not necessarily a weapon, but some sort of tool.  Without knowing what happened to the missing Runabout, we cannot necessarily assume that it was destroyed."

(Aravis?)

"Well, it could have been transported, made smaller, shifted in time, or even phased.  There are a number of options," replied the doctor after a moment of thought.
