Here is some information that could be accumulated from the various reports
that our favorite Romulan Admiral has requested. Let me know if there is a
type of information that I have not thought to include. I have been bad and
worked on this rather than work while I was covering the Reference Desk.
Things are just so slow, though, that I am all caught up!
Richard Bates
Age: 44 years old
Residence: Bates Creek Vineyards, Napa, California, Earth
Family: Parents â Robert and Susan (Freeman) Bates
Wife â Winifred
Children â Jackson (son) 25 and Jezebel (daughter) 23
Richard runs his family business, which is a vineyard that has been in the
family since the 1840âs. The family would be considered to be living
comfortably under just about anyoneâs standards. In fact, the vineyards are
competitive with most of the major wine producers on Earth, including
Picardâs of France.
The Bates family lives on a fairly large estate not far outside the town of
Napa in California. As a result of their successful business over the
centuries, they became quite involved in local, state, and national politics.
A number of senators, representatives and governors can be found among the
various branches of the family tree.
Richard Bates himself grew up knowing that he would be taking charge of the
family business, which had been struggling a bit in recent times due mostly to
increased competition from foreign markets. Knowing that the further opening
up of space trading lanes would make it harder to compete as the Alpha and Beta
Quadrants became more united left Richard with bitterness toward other-worlders.
He spent his youth in area public schools, but attended botany at the
University of California at Santa Barbara, with an obvious specialty in grapes.
He married his wife Winifred while still in college, where they started their
family while still attending classes. Jackson was born while they were
sophomores, and Jezebel was born shortly after graduation.
Winifred Bates has gone on to become a successful veterinarian serving many of
the area ranches, farms, and vineyards. Jackson is attending medical school
while Jezebel is working on her masterâs degree with the hope of becoming a
librarian.
Richard has been known to speak out vehemently against Earthâs involvement in
the politics of other worlds, but is particularly vocal when other powers seem
to interfere in the home government.
He is very good about using his wealth to support a number of public service
agencies, all of which work primary on Earth.
Richard currently sits on the Napa Town Council and is a leading member of the
Earth Vintnerâs Association.
