I did git pull now but

        git tag | grep spacewalk-backend

does not show the

        spacewalk-backend-0.2.5-1

tag as I would expect it to show.

Could it be that you've pushed the tag but not the commit itself, so
that the RELEASE-0.2 head was not updated?

Hmmm.

In the

        make srpm

target, I do

        git ls-remote $$UPSTREAM_REPO --tag $(SRPM_TAG)

to verify that the tag was pushed upstream (so that's what forces you
to do git push tag ...). Pushing the tag seems to push the underlying
commit alright but we'd like the commit to be a part of some branch as
well.

Any easy way how we could check for that too?
