I just wanted to follow up on this. The problems I was having were due to a misconfiguration for authentication. I had migrated the server from LDAP authentication to AD authentication using winbind. I forgot to modify the nsswitch.conf to actually use AD authentication and it just so happened that everyone except for the person with a nine character user id didn't keep his LDAP and AD passwords in sync.
