IBM AIX supports in place upgrades between major releases (5.3 -> 6.1 -> 7.1). The process is pretty simple and works well with their included utilities (NIM). In terms of "what people expect now": most, if not all, of the enterprise Linux/UNIX users I encounter need a direct upgrade path between major OS releases. Rebuilding an environment for each major release takes a ton of resources: additional servers/VMs, man hours, project planning, etc. (Sorry if this is off-topic.) -Jacob
