I ended up going a little more extreme in my patch for this issue (in HEAD, btw)
.  Basically if a write doesn't complete all the way, we'll truncate back to 
the 
last "known good" spot, sleep 1 second, and try again.  If we can't do the full 
write after 5 attempts, we'll abort.

This should leave the journal in a reasonably known good state, and also not 
kill the system if the write fails. :)
