Well, we don't ever _need_ to force the opportunistic calls, and if we haven't scanned a message, cleanup will abort (nothing to write to the journal). So I'd be ok with having them only run if a scan is fully completed though (aka: move cleanup and opportunistic_calls() up right before skip)...
