I had a look at the code and it seems #1 might be hardish anyway. It makes sense to get the logging up early on, but the privilege dropping is much later on in the code. So I guess it'd require a bit of work. Having the parent keep the root privilege is a reasonable idea, assuming not too much goes on in the parent...
