Yeah, the lock file is recommended in the SA docs. as I recall, to keep from
creating too many processes (ie, to serialize spamassassin calls on a per-user
basis). Since procmail is being invoked from the MTA (eg, sendmail) one would
hope that the necessary load balancing and serialization is left to a higher
level, yet the SA recommendation to use an explicit lockfile lingers on:

:0fw:spamassassin.lock
| /usr/bin/spamassassin
