The horrible SpamAssassin monster... it will come into your room while
you're sleeping, log in to the computer and changes your configuration.

Maybe the mail is actually being delivered to some other account which
does not have users_prefs but uses some site-wide settings, and mails
sent to that account gets forwarded to you later on at some point.
