Adam,

To confirm, you are not completely insane. I have also seen an increase in the
amount of email (both through our MTA in my webmaster account). We are up by
roughly 40% over the weekend.

The email traffic for us is extremely variable. Typically during the last week
through the second week of each fiscal quarter our email load goes from 100k
messages per day to ~200k messages per day. In the dead middle of fiscal
earnings season we see a drop by 50%.

A 40% bump for us usually goes unnoticed.

There was this hotmail account once that did trigger alerts. There was this
list moderator for a list that a client was one who used his hotmail account
for administrative purposes. As they some simlpe software for the list there
came a time when there was a problem. An email sent to the list hit his inbox,
which being full generated an NDR to the list which then generated an NDR to
the list which then generated an NDR to the list which then generated an NDR to
the list.

We noticed a couple hundred percent increase that day.

I'm bored. Guess I need to do some work now.

Gary

Subject: OT: Huge increase in inbound mail the past few days

This is slightly OT, but it is spam related:

Has anyone else seen a huge increase in the amount of mail coming in the
past few days? Our inbound connections per second have gone from an
average of about 4 to about 20 and the number of messages we're
processing each day has almost tripled since Saturday. Just for info
sake I'm running SA with Amavisd-new in the dual sendmail setup.

Do spammers deliberately target users of spamassassin with mail floods?
Cause that is kinda what this looks like.

thanks for any input,

Adam
