If you do that don't count on corresponding with somebody outside the
USA. Many international e-mail clients base64 encode messages that use
8-bit or unicode character sets, even when using only the 7-bit ASCII
part of the character set.

Being a university with correspondents all over the world, about
20% of our legimate email traffic is base64 encoded.
