Thanks for the tips.  I've got things working after a few random tweaks, 
an incantation or two, and several swift kicks to the side of the 
machine.  I wish I could say which thing fixed it, but right now I'm 
chalking it up the either the goat sacrifice, or the fact that I had 
amavisd's temp directory set incorrectly.
