Ok, it's ok if /etc/sysconfig/spamassassin didn't exist. The script will
then load the SPAMOPTIONS in the init script like you had it.  Just wanted
to make sure that if /etc/sysconfig/spamassassin did exist, the settings
where being changed their and not in the init script.  Otherwise, the
changes in the init script would be ignored.

Hmmm....I'm not sure then on the limiting the preforking problem.
It looks like the link Dallas posted is the solution.
