Thanks, Tyler.  As far as I know, the main visible difference in Win
8.1 is the Metro interface. (I have Win2K, XP, and 7 here.  I don't
have Win 8.) The file system and permissions model is still the one
used in Win Vista/7, and the need to install outside of Program Files
comes from that.  Installed in the Program Files hierarchy, it doesn't
have permission to run.  Installed outside, it does.

I assume your installation was with a 32 bit version of Office.  Most
problems posted here stem from attempting to use SpamBayes with 64 bit
Office - it's a 32 bit plugin, and not compatible.  The option in that
case is to install SpamBayes as a proxy server between your ISP and
Outlook, instead of attempting to use it as a plugin.
