Santiago -- Unsolicited commercial e-mail messages received by
Internet users are costing Chileans some $36.1 million a year,
according to a report released Monday by the Santiago Chamber of
Commerce.

This practice, known as "spamming," is costing Chile some $26.5
million in decreased productivity and $9.5 million in wasted
telephone calls, the study determined.

The report notes that despite repeated warnings on the negative
impacts of spamming, a 1998 privacy law ruled that the practice is
legal.
