Hi Philip, > Hello, today I received a number of "return to sender" emails indicating that my >email address has been used as the sender of spam messages. The spam is from two >different websites, one a mortgage company, the other selling viagra type products. > > What can I do to stop people from using my email address to send spam? In both >cases, the webservers are registered to people in California. If the spam originates >there, are they then subject to the California Business and Professions Code, section >17538.4? Do any federal laws apply here? So far I have only read about ISPs and the >email recipients being able to persue some recourse, but I've not read anything about >the person being impersonated.
I've had something like this a couple of months (something like since april or march this year) ago. In the end, I coped with it through a procmail rule. In fact, they used nonexisting addresses @iguana.be, and I got all the undeliverables (1000+ per day on average, go figure if this is only the undeliverable part ;-( ). Found out where the website was hosted etc, since the whois turned up some mailbox that was already full... The first time, their registrar blocked the domain, since the responsible person was unreachable. They switched to another registrar... There seems to be a world / galaxy of difference with what you can do in the real world and in cyberspace. Identity theft, even silly cases, is normally prosecuted, at least in .be... On the Net though ... It's all about the money of course. If time permits, using whatever legal methods, make them pay, not necessarily to you, but to somebody, so they have losses or at least less profit. Sad world... As you can see, I didn't solve the problem, I just switched off the red light ;-( Lots of side-effects. My undeliverable mails also are classified in a folder called probablyspam... kr= _______________________________________________ spamcon-general mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.spamcon.org/mailman/listinfo/spamcon-general#subscribers Subscribe, unsubscribe, etc: Use the URL above or send "help" in body of message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Contact administrator: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
