Apparently some companies have privacy policies that only go in one
direction. By this, I mean that they might promise not to share the email
address that you provided to them -- but they don't mind using a spamhaus
that is chock-a-block with dubiously obtained email addresses to spam on
thier behalf.
The company is question is Blair of Warren Pennsylvania (USA). The spamhaus
is 123hostway.com a.k.a Omnipointmarketing (registrant: OPM - 6700 N.
Andrews Avenue - Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309 US - 954-202-6000 )
Last night I recieved a spam on behalf of Blair. Headers as follows:
Received: (qmail 10039 invoked from network); 2 Mar 2004 23:18:37 -0000
Received: from unknown (HELO mail) (207.88.245.198)
by speedbuggy.telerama.com with SMTP; 2 Mar 2004 23:18:37 -0000
Received: from build (172.60.1.2) by mail (OPMMX Mail Server a1 v0.91) with
SMTP id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Tue, 2 Mar 2004 18:09:48 -0800
Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 17:35:52 -0800

Of course the email was fully of all kinds of nasty tracking codes, etc.
Problem here is that I have absolutely no need of, nor have I ever
requested info about, the polyester old folks clothes offered by Blair. But
even bigger than this is this fact that at Blair's website it plainly states:
If you provide us with your e-mail address during the order process or when
submitting a question, we will only use it to contact you regarding your
request or inquiry. Blair.com customer e-mail addresses are not shared with
or sold to any organization unless required by law.
I guess, however, that Blair will use dubiously obtained email addresses to
spam.
A clue stick has been despatched to Blair. We shall see what the outcome
shall be.
