No, you're not imagining things -- I screwed up.  I edited the 
configure.ac file but I forgot to regenerate the configure script.

I've fixed now (and double-checked it) and uploaded a new tarball to the 
website (with the same name).  If you download again, it should compile 
with the new version number.
