For what it's worth, I agree with the owner. If it were my server, I wouldn't do it without some serious testing and complete backups.
I would build a virtual machine (in VMWare), install and configure qmail and the webserver, then upgrade gcc and test it. If it doesn't work, you can roll it back and try again. Once you have a good procedure, you can try it for real. But then again, I'm not a daredevil by nature. Some people prefer to live on the edge. :) -- Sam Clippinger K.
