The AUTH= variants provide login information in a single request
(AUTH=<METHOD> <CREDENTIALS>) as opposed to 3 commands with normal AUTH
variant(1. request AUTH <METHOD>, 2. respond to User prompt, 3. respond
to password prompt). I'm sure you'll find it in some RFC if you care for
the details Youri.
On my server however the AUTH and AUTH= methods offered are identical,
so Sam is probably right in that it is a bug (I use qmail plesk-variant
which is patched with smtp-auth):
