I told you it was going to turn out to be a "D'oh" on my part ... :-)

You're quite right. That should indeed be a '5'.

I still have the feeling that the ip-blacklist hasn't been catching
everything it should, but that typo would definitely explain why today's
crop of spam has come streaming through uninterrupted. And for the rest,
it's possible that the French are just snow-shoeing their way through
their IP ranges faster than I expected, so that by the time I've
blacklisted one IP, they've already moved on to another.
