If you have lots of contacts or some really big calendars then there's a logging string that can be particularly large and cause the memory to spike. To avoid that, paste these lines into Terminal:
defaults write com.spanningsync logging_level 0 killall Spanning\ Sync Just be sure not to do this while it's syncing (i.e. while the menu bar icon is green).
