Google was having some sporadic mini-outages today, so you might have
been seeing that. If you're seeing the same problem tomorrow, try
loading the URL in your web browser: 
https://www.google.com/accounts/ClientLogin.
If your Mac can connect, you should see a message like
"Error=BadAuthentication" (which is good). If not, there's something
blocking the network connection.
