Hi, Spanning Sync keeps your iCal and Address Book in sync with Google Calendar and Google contacts. All this is done from the computer(s) as long as they are powered on and not in sleep mode. Spanning Sync doesn't do anything at all with Google Mail or the iPhone.
Since you have MobileMe, it will handle the over-the-air syncing of your calendars and contacts without having to connect the iPhone to the computer. So with MobileMe and Spanning Sync you should have everything you are looking for except for 'push' GMail, which as far as I know, isn't possible at this point.
