I think the most obvious is: people who are concerned that Google will
backfill all the functionality of Spanning Sync for free... By paying less
"per year", you are hedging against general and specific advances that
reduce the inherent value of Spanning Sync, while still supporting them for
their effort. For a single person/license, it probably makes little sense...
But for large groups, this would be a huge factor in favor of Spanning Sync
over alternatives - and businesses generally like this kind of arrangement
anyway.

Either way, I think based on the pace of progress, you'll never hit a point
with the subscription that you'll say "darn, I wish I had purchased
outright!" - either Google will take care of your needs, or Spanning Sync
will continue to innovate out ahead of the herd. The only place
subscriptions really fall down is where the software/service doesn't improve
incrementally - ad until Symantec buys Spanning Sync, I don't think we need
to worry about them freezing updates/improvements/etc.
