I'm having some erratic results searching my Google Contacts as well. Sometimes first name works, sometimes it doesn't. Searching for "Curtis" did not come up my friend who has that name, but did come up with someone else who lives on a Curtis Avenue. I don't remember what compatibility mode I'm in, but I dont' have a Blackberry.
Come to think of it, I DO sync contacts with my Motorola RAZR through iSync -- could that be the issue?
