I appreciate the thorough explanation.
Here's what's happening now: I've just done a sync, and the events I
corrected in iCal are not showing up in Google. I assume that's
because they have the same and start date/time. However, shouldn't
Spanning Sync be smart enough to know that the events in iCal have
been edited more recently and know to replace the events on Google
with the iCal events?
