OS X 10.5.8

Yea, my copy of Spanning Sync Tools is registered.

Also, I noticed something the last two times I created appointments in
iCal... I got a duplicated event very quickly, almost as soon as I
finished editing. The event is not duplicated on Google calendar, just
in iCal. The first time it happened, I was editing the event for a
while during creation, and one of the duplicates was clearly not the
final version, so I simply removed the "unfinished" duplicate in iCal
and things were okay. I chalked it up to overly aggressive syncing. ;)

MobileMe is set to sync automatically. Spanning Sync is set to sync
once per hour.

A few minutes ago, I created a new event in iCal, and the same thing
happened, except this time I didn't have an extended editing period,
and the two events seem identical in iCal. Google calendar has only
the one event.

I fired up Calendar Cleaner hoping it would be able to fix the issue
by merging the identical events or by deleting the right one so I
didn't end up with no event in Google calendar, and a orphaned event
in iCal. Calendar Cleaner found the duplicated event, but neither
merging the events or deleting the duplicate events does anything. I
can click on the Fix button, and it "highlights", but nothing changes
in the calendars. I still have the two identical events in iCal, and
the one event in Google calendar, even after a forced sync of Spanning
Sync. So, it appears my earlier statement that Calendar Cleaner was
working fine was in error.

I've created an error report and emailed it with a link to this thread
included.
