Steve, It works for me to an HTC Hero (running android too)!
Spanning Sync synchronises each of my iCal calendars and my address book to equivalent calendars and address book in Google. Then the Android (telephone) sync system automatically makes sure my phone is synchronised too. Meanwhile, MobileMe syncs between my Macs.
