I also have several Macs and an Eris. While I never had an issue with
spanning sync contact syncing myself, I did switch to using Address
Book's Google contact sync directly and that is working fine for me.

One thing that you may want to check on the Eris is whether you are
creating Google contacts or phone contacts. Google contacts will sync,
but phone contacts will not sync with Google.
