I solved this with some help from another piece of software's forum and for posterity, I'll summarize it here.
1. My problem arose due to an altered proxy setting in the standard HTTP protocols in OS X. While trying to set-up my internet connection I wound up putting in some proxy settings via my ISP's "getting started" interface. 2. Once I was online, I corrected the proxy settings for Firefox (my primary browser), but not for OS X built-in protocols. So Firefox was working, but nothing else was connecting to the internet properly. 3. I altered these OS X defaults using the "preferences pane" in Safari. In this case I removed proxies from my default connection.
