It's possible that the login item is pointing to the wrong location.
Try this:

* Open the Accounts pref pane, go to login items, and delete anything
with "Spanning" in the name.
* Open the Spanning Sync pref pane. It should automatically add itself
to the login items list, which you can now check by going back to
Accounts.

Let us know if that doesn't solve the problem.
