If you choose to sync yoru Contact in both MobileMe and on you iPhone via Itunes it will double you data. Simply by adding the MobileMe account onto your iPhone in E-mail accounts then delving further you can select it to synn Contacts and Calendars that way. Can't do both. Can't imagine why from how Spanning Sync appears to work it would double your data. Hope this helps. I only just figured it out a few days ago.
