I've setup a similar situation using Spanning Sync and Google rather than iCloud. Yeah, it's an extra step, and it can take a little work getting it to work, but once it does, it's incredibly stable and responsive.
You don't have to switch to Google Calendar, Contacts, and Gmail, you can just use it as a sync source. Spanning has done an amazing job getting the Google APIs and quirks to play nicely with the Mac and iOS environments. Google starts to explain the iOS setup routine here: http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740 Going this route via Google allows me to sync 2 Macs, 1 PC (Google Apps Sync), 2 iPads, 1 iPod Touch, and an Android phone. It's incredible. I hope that gives you a glimmer of hope.
