I have been monitoring the list for some time and still have not seen or
have a diffinative answer.

I have ia sparc 2 running 2.0.35 kernel. For the most part it's stable
with the exception of the slow down issue and serial port problem.

I am running a dumb terminal off of ttyS1 (ttyb) and have a modem
connected to ttyS0/cua0 (ttya). The terminal works fine until the
ppp closes the port after a connection. That is when the ttyS1 port
hangs. I have to kill the process on ttyS1, and getty will restart
just fine until ppp closes the port again. Note that port operation
appears to be correct - DTR is active when port is open, DTR is not
active when port is closed.

I've tried serveral kernels (2.1) and the latest 2.2.1. Here is
what I am seeing with serial port operation:

The ports do not hang. However, the DTR operation does not
work correctly. The DTR signal stays active even when the port is
closed. I had to reconfigure the modem so that it will not go
on hook when a call arrives.

X also will hang/die. The keyboard act as if it is frozen; however,
running xdm will restart the xdm session when X dies. BTW, I am runing Red
Hat 5.2 with latest X updates (XFree86-3.3.2.3-25). I believe have seen
some emails back and for regarding this problem, but I have not seen any
solutions.

Any suggestions? Are there stable sparc 2 with 2.2.1 kernel and X?

        Thanks in Advance,

                -chris
