It sounds to me like you have a type 4 mouse and a type 5 mousepad.
The type 4 and type 5 optical mice have different pads to work on.
I have 3 suggestions for you (imho, worst to best):
1) Get a type 4 opticad mousepad
2) Get a type 5 optical mouse
3) Get a mechanical mouse (any type/make)
You can use un Sun mouse on your machine... I personally like
the type 6 the most... then the type 5... and then the type 4.
(For keyboards, I like 5, then 6, then 4).
