Dear Sebastien, 

You need to specify the point to be used to index the pulse (i.e., -x 
FIRST_RETURN or -x LAST_RETURN) if there is only one point for each pulse these 
will produce the same results. Therefore your command should be:

> spdtranslate --if LAS --of SPD -x FIRST_RETURN -i pts2las.las -o pts2las.spd

Bare in mind that you might also want to index your data (using the -b option, 
-b 1 will put it onto a 1 m index).
